Reunification at 38th parallel !!!!
'FAT-MAN', a nuclearized bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan on 9th
August 1945, not only ended the so called mighty World War-II but also slipped the
Korean peninsula from the hands of Japan, one of the mightiest empire of that
time. There was mere a replacement of WW-II for a more dangerous and draconian era of
cold war, where constantly tensions persisted in the form of fear of breaking of 3rd
World war. In simple words, it was an invisible standoff between the two mighty
blocs- US block (including USA and giant European powers like Britain,
France, etc.) and USSR block (today’s Russia, few central Asian countries, and
few European countries like Estonia, Latonia, Lithuania, etc.). This period was
marked with tussles in form of exhibiting the blind arms race, nuclear tests,
and this even included no. of proxy wars, where US’s stand was to contain
Communism and USSR’s was to proliferate it. The moment if these two powers had
directly come against each other, this might had lead to 3rd World
war. But this never happened in the span of 46 years and the tensions were only
restricted to proxy wars, where their agendas were firm but they never involved
them in an open face off against each other directly, but via other host
countries or leaders.
One such was the Korean war (1950-53). The peninsula was very much
influence by USSR, its upper hand was its proximity. As I mentioned above the
US blocs’ agenda was to contain communism, which was for sure going towards it and when it slipped out of the hands of Japan, USSR being the allied power
tried to took it under its control. To counter this the NATO (A security group of
US bloc to contain Communism) launched several missions and tried very hard to take Korea into its
control, but was unable to achieve it. Now comes the aid in form of United Nations. It was quite out in the open that United Nations came under direct control under its 5 UN
security council (UNSC) members dominated by US bloc, which were USA, Britain,
France, Formosa(now taiwan) and USSR (at that time). USSR in the reign of cold war had
majorly withdrawn from its meeting (in name of protests) and hence it didn't used its veto power to counter US blocs members’ decisions in UNSC for mission in Korea. UN
peace-keeping force entered the peninsula and liberated it till the 38th parallel (latitude)
and an armistice was signed on July 23,1953, splitting the peninsula into two
countries North Korea, with heavy influence of Communism and South with
Capitalism.
At Panmunjom, the border point on 38th parallel, where a
recent exchange of talks between North Korea dictator Mr.
Kim-Jong-Un and South Korea President Mr. Moon-Jae-In, came with heavy promises
of ending this split(at later phase) and start of denuclearization of entire
peninsula. North conducted numerous nuclear test including even an alleged hydrogen
bomb and deployed numerous nuclear weapons (latest in November which is an ICBM of
range of more than 6000 km, which brings every portion USA’s territory into its firing
range). South Korea a signatory to NPT was never involved in conducting nuclear
tests but it is not alien in deploying weapons such as THAAD,
and other interceptor missiles, etc with USA's aid.
These sweet promises, exchanges of handshakes and a cute token of stepping in each others’ territory across border by both Un and In, should never be taken lightly. A golden rule of International relationship where it shows that it can take an about turn at anytime. Also nothing here happens is without a hidden motive and is never short sighted. Possible motive behind the North’s agenda is the burden of sanctions which are levied on it by UN since years, which are now becoming counter productive and piling up its budget deficit racks. Where the reason behind South is more clear unlike its enigmatic counterpart Kim, which is the fore coming talks of Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim.

Inspite of the reasons behind the curtains, what is surely analysed
by the experts is the possibility of world witnessing another nuclear attack is
now dragged a little more away and hopefully the upcoming talks between both
unpredictable leaders may come up with the prospects of peace and prosperity to
entire human race.
Will try to cover the furher stories in upcoming blogs.
